She was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 31, 1970. Growing in Long Island, she was raised in the suburbs of Merrick. She studied piano with the acclaimed pianist Morton Estrin. Gibson began making and writing her own songs in the early years before being featured on the Billboard Hot 100. At the age of 14 the demo tape she had made was discovered in the possession of a well-known radio personality. The DJ gave it to an executive at Atlantic Records and her original track "Only in My Dreams" was instrumental in securing an initial development deal. She started a promotional tour of venues throughout the United States. The majority of 1986 was spent and 1987 working on her catalog of songwriting as she continued to tour venues. Debbie's mom would accompany her to her gigs. At the same time, she was enrolled in classes at Calhoun High School in Merrick, New York. Then, she was awarded an honors degree.
